What is it about Castelgreve Chianti that makes it perfect for Italian food? Of course there’s the nose – often brimming with red fruit – sometimes a little bit of black fruit too. And if it’s been aged, it can often develop those intoxicating aromas of leather, tobacco and even meatiness. Not sure why, but when that bumps up against rich Italian food it’s a love thing. Second, I love Chianti’s medium-body. It can be bigger, but typically it’s medium to medium plus. Not too big in the mouth, but enough so that it matches the big flavors of tomato and garlic. And finally, it’s the flavor in the mouth – the sour cherries that are so associated with Sangiovese. Tomatoes are more tomato-y and cherries are cherrier when you put them together. The acidity of Chianti also works well with that of the tomatoes. Add in the creaminess of Mozzarella cheese and the salty crispy bread and you can see why Central Italy loves Chianti. Castelgreve is a Chianti Classico Riserva, and the sophistication you’d expect from that designation is all there. If you want to know more about what Classico and Riserva mean, watch this. This wine is pretty widely available. We got ours at Costco. Buon Appetito!
